Mama Lynn's Sewing Machine

I love the idea of Sentimental Sunday.  My home is full of precious family treasures.  I first saw this link up party on This Blessed Nest and Maine Mummy.  I decided to head over to Sit Relax and Read and join in the sentimental sharing.

I lived with my grandparents growing up.  My grandmother's mother, Mama Lynn, was extremely talented at crocheting, sewing and embroidery.  As a young girl I remember going to Mama Lynn's house so my grandmother could check in on her.  I would spend hours playing at her house.  My favorite thing to play with was her Singer treadle sewing machine.  I was fascinated by the machine.

When I was a very young child I asked Mama Lynn if I could have her sewing machine when she died.  She said yes.  I ended up getting the sewing machine before she passed away.  Her old farmhouse in the country was broken into when she could no longer live at home, and my grandmother brought the machine to our house for safekeeping.

The older I get the more I appreciate what a special treasure this is.  I have numerous cousins who would have loved and appreciated the machine as much as I do.  I feel very lucky to have been given the machine.  I hope that my family knows how much it is loved and cherished.

When I got married and had my own home the machine was moved to my house.  It stayed for a long time in our guest bedroom, but when that turned into Ben's nursery it was moved to the living room.

I'm too lazy to go to the attic to dig through boxes, but there are wooden spools of colorful thread that were saved inside the machine that I kept.  My great-grandmother never threw anything away and she has the original papers and envelopes that contain the paperwork and receipts from when she purchased the machine.  They are in the attic as well.

Thank you for allowing me to share a special piece of my life and family.  I look forward to participating in more Sentimental Sundays.

  2. Wow! I love this, I had my Great Great Aunt's old sewing machine when we lived in England but sadly that was too heavy to bring over. This is so special, I'm so glad you joined in today!

  3. I have a similar old machine that I got years ago at a garage sale. I have often wondered if that lady's family cared that she sold the old treadle machine to a stranger for $30. But I love it so much. I have to keep it in storage now because there's just no room for it in the house. But once the kids are gone I am going to haul that sweet thing back into the house. Looking at yours really makes me miss it! Lisa~

  4. My dad has my grandmother's machine exactly like this one. It will be passed to me. It still works. It is where I learned to sew.

  5. Finally I found the correct blog with pics of the sewing machine! I saw a tiny pic when I was typing another comment, but when I hit the button to publish my comment it disappeared, so I have been wandering around your blog reading as I searched for it. We were unable to go to Grandma's house until after her funeral, so Aunt Imogene saved some tiny treasures for us. One thing that I have of Grandma Icie's is a small wooden hexagon that she used to cut fabric for the quilt pieces. It also had some of the fabric cut in the shapes. I pieced some of them together to make one flower block for each of my sisters and myself. I plan to take mine and put it in a shadow box with the wooden pattern piece. Because I like to quilt, that was a very special treasure to me. I think I may put your pics of the treadle machine in it too, even though she did quilting by hand. Thanks so much for posting these pics and I'm thrilled that you love the family treasures as much as I do. My blog is mostly my artwork so I'm thinking I need another blog for walks down memory lane and my great vintage finds in junk shops and estate sales.

  6. Is the chair one of Icie/Lynn's too? Just wondering because I got one of their rockers. It was in terrible shape, so I had someone refinish it for me and then someone else reupholster it. I absolutely love it. Sharon also got a chair (without rockers). They look very similiar to the chair in the picture. I think the ones we got were in their screened in back porch.
