Christmas Eve and Christmas 2016

Christmas Eve and Christmas 2016

The photos are jumbled up between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  I shared some of my favorites from the two days.

This could be one of my very favorite photos of the boys ever, and it was taken on Christmas Eve night.

Making cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

The boys always track Santa on the NORAD Santa Tracker, and when they see he is in the U.S. they know it's time to go to bed.

Back home on Christmas Eve
We had to say goodbye to our Elf Pets
Last year we adopted a Reindeer named Speedy, and this year we added a new pet.  We adopted a St. Bernard that we named Jingle.

Also we said goodbye to our Elf, Bill, until next year.

Christmas in our new home

Our first Christmas in our new home!

It was everything I thought it would be.
Magical, Wonderful, Amazing, Delightful, Sweet, Sentimental, Joyous, Restful, Relaxing, Fun!

I took most of the photos on my iPhone.  I started decorating before Thanksgiving, and I plan to leave up the decorations until the new year.   It's been exciting to celebrate in our new home that we've dreamed about for so long that I couldn't take it all down just yet.

Thanks For the Memories

This is our house in 2003, a year after it was built.

Here's a final photo with the boys taken on Sunday after church in front of the house that was their first home.

Today is a big day for our family.  We are scheduled to close on the sell of our home.  It's been a whirlwind the last few months, and I've been unusually silent on the blog.  There are several reasons why.  The main focus of our lives lately has been preparing our home to sell.  It feels strange to share some personal details of our lives, even though I'm open about things, the sell of our home just didn't feel right to blog about.  The other reason I've been distracted from blogging is that things are full steam ahead on construction of the new house.  Throw moving to a temporary home into the mix  and I don't know if I'm coming or going.  I haven't even had time to stop and process all that is happening, which may be a good thing.  There's no time to worry about things, we just have to get it done and move on.

I don't have very much time, but I wanted to take a minute to slow down and reflect on the last 13 years in the house that's been our home, I feel overwhelmed with emotions.  This home has been full of such wonderful memories.  I can't even begin to describe how many happy moments I've experienced here.  I stood for a moment in the middle of the empty living room trying to think of all the good times, and the memories flooded through my mind.  It felt like a movie montage--all the faces, people, and moments.  Maybe one day I will write down some of them, but for now, I can only say that I am grateful for these four walls and the roof over our heads.  It's been more than just a shelter, it's been a home for my family.  First a home for Mark and I, and then for us as parents to Will and Ben.  It's hosted beloved family members who are no longer with us and numerous family and friends who we plan to have as guests at our new home where we will hopefully make many more happy memories together.

I'll be honest, as I sit here and type I'm crying and I can't stop the tears from coming down my face.  I think it's because of all the emotions I feel right now.  It's difficult to process the letting go of the tangible reminder of all of the memories I associate with this home.  Even though I'm sentimental with a touch of sadness, I mostly feel love and gratitude for the memories of all the good times that I have to cherish from this home.  It's been better than I could have imagined.

Thanks for the memories sweet first home.
You've been good to our family.

5 Years--Then and Now

I started blogging 5 years ago and life looked a lot different back then.  Ben was about to turn 1 and Will was 3 1/2 years old.  Our life revolved around the baby and toddler.  Those were fun years and the boys were sweet, but raising children that age can be challenging.  I miss the days of the boys being little, but there are many advantages now that they are older and more independent.  It's hard to believe that Ben is almost finished with kindergarten, and he's about to turn 6.  Will has almost completed 2nd grade and is 8 1/2.  The boys' lives are all about school, sports, riding bikes, playing outside, games on the iPad, Wii or Nintendo DS, Legos, and friends.  Will and Ben are best buddies and I'm thankful they love each other.  Currently they share a room, and at night I love hearing them talk and laugh.  God's blessed with us with those two more than I could have ever imagined.

As for Mark and me, life is still really good. Back in 2010, we'd been married almost 8 years.  Today we still feel as happy now as we did then.  We've always had a great marriage, but I think it gets easier the longer we've been married.  Mark and I have been married long enough to feel comfortable, but instead of that being a bad thing I find it comforting.  There's an assurance knowing that we'll always be together and we want the same things in life.  Not a lot has changed in most areas of our life.  We still live and work where we did 5 years ago.  We still attend the same church.  We still have the same friends. We still love to travel and spend time with our family.

Not everything is the same though.  The family photo above is a clue.  There are some big changes in the near future.  We will be moving soon because we are in the process of building our new home.  The new home will be in the field behind us where we took this photo.  Many like to call what we are building a "forever home", which is how we think of it.  It's truly our dream home that will be a new old farmhouse out in the country on some land Mark bought before we got married.  Did I ever mention that's where he proposed?  It is!  Thirteen years ago he asked and I said yes.  So it's a special place to us for many reasons.

There have been challenges in our lives the last five years.  Some of them I've shared, and other things I've chosen to keep to myself.  I'm an open book, but some things needed to stay private.  I've always tried to navigate the fine line between being encouraging by sharing our struggles, but also remembering that it's important to handle difficult situations with dignity.  Sometimes the most dignified way to do that is being reserved and sharing less.  Overall I can't complain.  Even when we've gone through trials, the Lord has seen us through.  We've grown from the struggles we've faced and we press on to the goal.

Looking back at the last 5 years reminds me to think ahead to the future.  It's hard to believe in 5 more years that Will will be 13--a teenager--oh my goodness!  Ben will be 10--almost 11, which blows my mind.

I love that this blog has been a place to keep our special family memories.  It's also been an outlet to share important thoughts.  The biggest surprise from blogging is that it's even provided me friendship.  What an unexpected blessing!  The memories and encouragement are just a few of the reasons I'm grateful for this little blog and the blogging community.  Lord willing I'll be around for many more years to come.

If you're reading this, thanks for spending time with me and being a part of our Imperfectly Wonderful World. We're living proof that life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful.

And just for the fun of it, here's the link to my very first blog post ever on May 5,  2010.

Blessing in Disguise

Last week I had one of those mornings.  You know the ones.  Mine started off with me taking a half day off from work to go the doctor.  I showed up and was told that I had come to the appointment on the wrong day.  Big oops!  I didn't have to be back to work for several hours.  I didn't need to go to the store to buy groceries.  I'd already eaten breakfast.  I really wasn't in the mood to spend $5 for coffee at Starbucks.  What could I do with the time I had before I returned to work?  As I pulled out of the parking lot I thought I should go visit my grandma in the nursing home.  She's just right around the corner from my doctor's office.  I don't visit as often as I should.  The last few times I've tried to visit her, she's been asleep and I didn't want to disturb her.  I was hoping she'd be awake since this wasn't my usual time to stop by.  I showed up at the nursing home, which was on partial lock down because of the flu.  I decided to go in anyway.  (I mean, come on,  I work at a school and I've been to Walmart in the last week so I've been exposed.)

I'm glad that I made the decision to visit!

Mama Winnie was awake and she was having a good day.  Since her Alzheimer's has progressed she has moments where she is very agitated and confused.  It's been over a year since she's known us.  In the last few visits we've had with her she mumbles a lot and looks very disoriented.  So when I say she was having a good day, it means that she wasn't showing the signs that I just mentioned.  Mama Winnie still doesn't know who I am, and I don't expect her to ever recognize me again.  That's a sad thing, but I've learned to adjust my expectations and I don't have to have her recognize me for it to be a positive visit.  This day was so special because she was calm and she seemed happy.  There was a light in her eyes that's sometimes not there.  She was relaxed and pleasant and even laughed.  I sat in her room and talked to her.  She likes us to pat her hair and rub her arms.  I tried to hold her hand but her fingers have arthritis and I didn't want to make her uncomfortable.  I showed her photos on my phone of Will and Ben.  I also told her stories that I've heard her tell me over and over when I was growing up.  One I remembered to tell her was about the time she fell off a wagon as a girl and broke her arm and the doctor set it straighter than the arm she hadn't broken. I talked about her big garden and all of the fruits and vegetables she used to raise in it.  I also talked about cooking, baking, and sewing.  All things she loved.  The nurse brought her mid-morning snack of ice cream.  She usually eats it on her own, but since I was there I fed it to her.  It was a nice moment.

After I'd stayed awhile, it was time for me to go back to work.  I hugged Mama Winnie and told her I love you and she said I love you back.

I asked the nurses aide to take our photo.  I shared it on Instagram and Facebook, and the comments people left were so nice.  With the photo I included an explanation of how I ended up at the nursing home after making the mistake of taking off the wrong day for my appointment.

Most of the comments were along the lines of...
God works in mysterious ways
Things happen for a reason
It was meant to be

And, I couldn't help but think it was a blessing in disguise.

I'll treasure that visit for many years to come.

I Love Weddings!

I love weddings!

Don't you?

The older I get the more sentimental I become.  I couldn't help but cry numerous times at this sweet wedding.  It's a precious thing to watch two people take marriage vows in front of family and friends.  Hearing two people who love each other make those promises never gets old.  I can't help but remember my wedding and think about the promises Mark and I made to each other that day.  I wish that happiness for others and to see my friends make the same commitment to someone they love fills my heart with joy.  My longtime friend Cory got married this weekend.  Travis and Cory's wedding was perfect.  The venue was beautiful and the attention to detail made it really special.  Plus, it was a lot of fun!

Here are some of my favorite photos of the special evening.  There were some amazing photos that others took of the good food, fireworks, dancing, the Aggie War Hymn, and many other things, but instead of being glued to my phone taking photos, I stayed in the moment and enjoyed it all.

We had a moment before the wedding when Terri made us cry when she said we've been there for each other for a lot of things.   We've all stood beside each other through all of our weddings.  It's a blessing to have good people to go through life with who stand by your side. I'm lucky to have these two for friends!

Congratulations, Cory and Travis!
We wish you happily ever after!

They even had a very rainy wedding day so their marriage will be blessed by the downpour that happened.  It rained on mine and Mark's wedding day and it's worked out well for us!

I'll have more photos from our road trip to Austin up on the blog soon.
